Heating Oil Tank Leak in Fords, New Jersey

A client who was planning to sell his home reached out to Meridian Environmental after having his 550-gallon oil tank removed and finding that it had leaked. Meridian performed a site visit and plume delineation to determine the full extent of the contamination from the leaking tank. While performing the site visit, Meridian observed that the previous company had failed to backfill the excavation properly resulting in settlement and damage to the surrounding area including the both the homeowners’ and neighbors’ concrete patio and walkways.

Approach

Meridian fully delineated the area of concern at the property, and found that the contamination had spread below the footings of both homes’ foundations and into the groundwater table.

The contaminated soil needed to be completely removed. Meridian installed several helical piers as designed by an engineer to support both the homeowner’s and neighbor’s foundation so that the deeper soils could be excavated. The impacted groundwater was then pumped out with series of pumps and treated through a filtration system.

Once the impacted soil and groundwater were remediated, Meridian backfilled the excavation with certified clean fill and restored the site to a condition that was superior to the original site visit was performed. Meridian restored the concrete walkways, patios, and porches that were affected by the original tank removal and remediation.

Resolution

The results of the soil and groundwater remediation satisfied all state requirements and the homeowner was permitted to sell his property as planned.
